தேவதாஸ் 1953 ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த தமிழ்த் திரைப்படமாகும். வேதாந்தம் ராமைய்யாஇயக்கத்தில் வெளிவந்த இத்திரைப்படத்தில் ஏ. நாகேஸ்வர ராவ், எம். என். நம்பியார்,சாவித்திரி மற்றும் பால்ரும் நடித்துள்ளனர்.

brilliant performance Nageswara Rao in Devadas
The story is all about a feudal lord's son Devdas falling in love with a poor girl Parvathi. Due to differences in social and economic status, the weak-willed youth cannot marry his childhood playmate and sweetheart, and Parvathi marries an old man. However, unable to forget her, he takes to the bottle. A golden-hearted prostitute Chandramukhi befriends him and tries to make him forget his past. But soon he rushes to meet Parvathi in vain. Heartbroken, he dies in front of her house.
A bestseller, the novel was translated into many Indian languages and noted Telugu writer, translator and film producer Chakrapani (A. V. Subba Rao) of `Nagi Reddi-Chakrapani' fame wrote the Telugu version. The film medium's `obsession' with the novel began in 1928 when the first film version was made at Calcutta by Naresh Mitra who also played a major role in this silent movie. The cinematographer was Nitin Bose, later well-known filmmaker of hits such as Deedar, Kathputli and Ganga Jumna. Movie began to speak in India in 1931 and the first talkie version of Devdas came out in 1935. The celebrated film company, New Theaters, Calcutta, produced it in Bengali and Hindi. Real-life prince-turned-actor- filmmaker P. C. Barua directed both versions.
The tragic love story of Devdas has been adapted to the screen several times in many languages, and the 1953 version in Tamil and Telugu was not only a major hit but also considered by many critics as the best.
The credit for such high praise should go to the hero Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the bilingual superstar. His performance as the ill-fated lover was so classic that even today if one mentions Devadas, ANR's image comes to mind instantly. Savithri as his heartthrob lent him excellent support, and Lalitha played the vamp Chandramukhi. Besides impressive performances, the music (C. R. Subbaraman, lyrics K. D. Santhanam, Udumalai Narayana Kavi) contributed to the success with many songs becoming hits. Sadly CRS (one of the producers) passed away during the making of the film, and some of the songs written but not composed by him were done by his assistants Viswanathan-Ramamurthi. The hit song, `Wulagey maayam, vaazhvey maayam.', was composed by this talented duo. Brilliant photography (B. S. Ranga) and interesting onscreen narration by choreographer- filmmaker Raghavaiah also contributed to the success.
The director, Vedantam Raghavaiah, was a successful filmmaker. He hailed from a family of well known Kuchipudi dancers in Andhra and entered films as a choreographer, before he graduated to film direction and production. He was one of the partners in Vinodha Pictures which produced Devadas.
He was immensely helped by the excellent camera work by B. S. Ranga who later became a multilingual producer-director- studio owner.
Remembered for the empathetically brilliant performance of Nageswara Rao in the title role and equally impressive acting by Savithri. And for the tuneful music and songs.
